BINI CHAMPIONS PH CULTURE, HERITAGE IN SHAGIDI MV
The Nation’s Girl Group for a reason.
BINI lived up to its lofty billing, showcasing Filipino culture and heritage to the fullest in its new music video for SHAGIDI that served as its special tour single during its first-ever BINIVERSE World Tour across 15 cities.
BINI – clad in colorful dresses with ethnic patterns as a nod to the local weavers – paid homage to its humble roots, epitomizing its global rise to fly the Philippine flag high overseas, through its fashion trademark.
From outfits to accessories of Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna and Sheena, BINI put premium on every facet of Pinoy culture, particularly on the Philippine weaving industry and its incomparable contribution to the country’s pride.
And that served as a cherry on top to an already tribute song of Shagidi, released in the middle of BINI’s tour last June, as a revival of the iconic Filipino game during the 90s.
“We want to find ways to reflect who we are and where we come from. For our Filipino fans, we hope it sparks pride and for our foreign audience, we want it to be a gateway for them to be curious about our country,” said BINI’s leader Jhoanna Robles during a special MV premier with select Blooms at the Dolphy Theater in Quezon City.
BINI championing every fabric of Filipino culture in this MV – made by YouMeUs Manila – is an understatement and here’s every representation spotted by Bloom Page that will only make you prouder as a Pinoy, contrary to social media misconceptions unfairly centering on food preference as of late, when the octet has been oozing with PH pride since Day 1, whether through songs and advocacices.
EVERY FILIPINO REPRESENTATION IN BINI's SHAGIDI MV:
1. BINI’S INTRO AND FINALE SHOT OUTFITS (FROM ETHNIC PATTERNS TO PH FLAG)
- BINI started the MV with unique brown-themed outfits and handwoven accessories featuring ethnic and tribal patterns as a nod to the local weaving industry. BINI then ended the MV with an outfit transition, this time clad in Red and Blue colors with Yellow fonts, symbolizing the Philippine flag. The Blue-Red PH flag imagery can be particularly seen on the dresses of Gwen and Maloi. In a way, BINI’s Shagidi outfit can also be referenced to Zamboanga’s colorful Vintas.
2. SHEENA’S ABANIKO AS A TRIBUTE TO PH NATIONAL LEAF ANAHAW
- Sheena’s Abaniko (Pamaypay) was in full display during her solo finale shot, mirroring the country’s national leaf of Anahaw. It’s also a nod to the Philippine weaving industry, doubling down on the importance of locally-made fans in the modern age, especially with the presence of electronic and portable fans.
3. PITAKA (BATIK PURSE), KUMOT AND BANIG
- BINI once again took the Philippine weaving industry to center stage of the Shagidi MV with multiple representations in form of the members’ accessories. Jhoanna, Maloi and Stacey are among those who sported vintage pitakas (wallet/purse) made up from abaca. Stacey’s pants in the finale shot also symbolized the ever-colorful banig (mats) that’s staple in Philippine homes, especially in the provinces. A shot of a girl hanging blankets (pagsasampay ng kumot) was also featured while Maloi wore handwoven bracelets.
4. TRIBUTE TO FERNANDO AMORSOLO’S “LAVANDERAS”
- There’s more to than just local weavers in Shagidi MV as BINI also paid tribute to the greatest Filipino painter in Fernando Amorsolo. BINI had a reference to Amorsolo’s “Lavanderas” painting in Sheena’s outfits as revealed by fashion designer Renan Pacson. It's also worth noting that BINI recognized Amorsolo for SHAGIDI that had a cover art made by main vocalist and artist herself in Maloi, who has her own digital collection.
5. SALAKOT
- Clad in an outfit with ethnic patterns, Gwen wore a salakot, albeit modernized with metal accessories, in a nod to the ardent, heroic farmers and fishermen of the Islang Pantropiko.
6. FILIPINO SLINGSHOT (TIRADOR)
- BINI doubled down in the revival of iconic Shagidi game, also throwing it back with tirador as seen on Gwen’s pants. Tirador is a home-crafted kid’s slingshot toy using either small fruits, plastic pellets or balled papers.
7. HARI NG KALSADA (Jeepney)
- Like a lore, BINI once again had easter egss on its MV similar to its previous ones that somehow connects every video and song. This time, Maloi had four keychains on her pants including Jeepney for Shagidi as a nod to the country’s most iconic transportation dubbed as “Hari ng Kalsada”. Maloi’s jeepney also transitioned to the rap section of Stacey and Mikha while in a modern jeep that’s being pushed today as a replacement to the traditional jeepneys. Jeepney was also featured on the song’s cover art, made by Maloi herself. Other keychains wore by Maloi were Diamonds, Eye and Cherry as symbols for their last three MVs namely Zero Pressure, Blink Twice and Cherry on Top, respectively.
8. MASSKARA AND ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL
- Two of the country’s most important and iconic festivals in Ati-Atihan (Aklan) and Masskara (Bacolod) were also featured by BINI with festive masks during Shagidi’s dance break.
9. TOURIST SPOTS
- As per designer Renan Pacson, BINI’s intro outfits were also a homage to the country’s top tourist destinations and the group members’ hometowns. Colors, designs and fabrics of BINI mirrored the Chocolate Hills, Mayon (Cagsawa Church), Taal, Rizal Shrine, National Museum, Fort Santiago, Intramuros, Vigan (Kalesa), Hundred Islands, Banaue Rice Terraces, Our Lady of Atocha Catholic Church in Isabela, Colors of Stobosa in La Trinidad, Benguet, and Sto. Niño Church in Cebu along with the beaches of Panglao, Bohol, Cebu and El Nido, Palawan.
BINI is the Nation’s Girl Group and the SHAGIDI MV filled with every fabric of Filipino culture, heritage and pride is only one of the million reasons why.
